00:00 - Intro
Hey everyone, welcome back to the channel. Today, we're going to discuss vital personal and community defense strategies, especially for those of you planning to go to the hospital anytime soon. These tips can make a significant difference, so stay tuned!
03:36 - #1 Assume Incompetence
First, assume incompetence. Sadly, not every medical professional you encounter will be competent or have your best interests at heart. It's crucial to be vigilant and double-check everything.
06:23 - #2 Always Have an Advocate
Always have an advocate with you. This person can ensure that your needs and concerns are communicated effectively, especially when you're not in a position to do so yourself.
07:15 - #3 Concise Communication
Use concise communication. Be clear and direct about your symptoms, history, and concerns. This avoids misunderstandings and ensures that the medical staff knows exactly what you're dealing with.
09:17 - #4 Document Everything
Document everything. Keep a diary or a log of all interactions, treatments, and medications. This record can be invaluable if there are disputes or if you need to reference it later.
10:45 - #5 Ask Questions
Don't be afraid to ask questions. If something doesn't make sense or you're unsure about a procedure or medication, ask for clarification. Your health is too important to be left in the dark.
11:18 - #6 Bribe
While it might sound controversial, a small token of appreciation can sometimes go a long way. A simple gesture can ensure that you're treated with a bit more care and attention.
12:42 - #7 Say Thank You and Please
Remember to say thank you and please. Politeness can foster goodwill and build a positive rapport with the medical staff, which can be beneficial in the long run.
15:35 - #8 Beware of The Red Tape
Beware of the red tape. Hospitals can be bureaucratic nightmares, so familiarize yourself with their processes and be prepared to navigate through the administrative maze.
17:08 - #9 Advanced Directives
Have your advanced directives ready. Make sure your wishes about treatments and procedures are documented and known to your advocate and medical team.
18:04 - #10 Pack Comfort Items
Lastly, pack comfort items. Hospital stays can be stressful, so bringing items like a favorite blanket, pillow, or book can make the experience more bearable.

Agreed with all of that. One point worth highlighting is the DNR. After what I witnessed as a hospital RN during Covid, I view DNR as an easy "write off", just in case "something" goes wrong...
